Is This Galerucella? Some seventh grade students on team Aroostook have brought in many small beetles that were in the pond area. A mission that I would like to pursue is to identify any Galerucella beetles so I am going to study these beetles and see if they are Galerucella. The beetles found in the pond area were set into a small container with some known purple loosestrife leaves and some leaves from other plants. As the beetles were in the container for many days, they laid yellow and pink eggs. To see if these beetles were Galerucella, I took a closer look at them. When I saw the beetles with a little more detail, I notice some characteristic differences.So I believe these beetles are not Galerucella. The habitat of the beetles was a small wet land filled with tall grasses and large shrubs. There were also some other small plants and trees that outlined the area. The area is located in front of the school. Near the area was a Massabesic Middle School drive way for buses. The climate of the habitat on the day the students went out was not recorded but the day was cloudy and a little humid. There was no rain. I know this because later that day, myself and others from my class went out to look for any purple loosestrife. Once I came in from studying the area, I decided to get a closer look, like I had said before. What I did was I and 71cd10 took a dead beetle with tweezers, put it under the microscope, then took pictures of the beetle through the lens of the microscope. As I saw the beetle in the microscope, I noticed that instead of the distinctive light brown with a large black oval spotted abdomen, like the Galerucella beetle, the beetles found in the pond area had an abdomen that was gold with black spots. Also, the beetle found had a glossy abdomen were as the Galerucella beetle does not. Another characteristic of the Galerucella beetle is the light brown thorax with a small black dot in the center. The beetle I am studying has a black glossy thorax with large red spots on the sides. The head of the Galerucella beetle is a light brown were as the head of the beetle found is a dark black. With these observations of the body of each insect, it shows that they are two very different beetles. Galerucella beetles lay white eggs in the spring. When the beetles that I am studying laid eggs, they were yellow and pink. Once the eggs hatched and grew into maggots, they were black. The Galerucella maggots are yellow with black heads. So the eggs and maggots are also different in colors. With these large differences you can see that the beetle I am studying is not the Gallerucella beetle. These beetles that I have been observing are all around the pond area. Believing that these beetles are not Galerucella, I think that Galerucella has not yet arrived at Massabesic Middle School campus. I hope that Gallerucella will not be found on campus because it is an invasive species and the invasive species could negatively effect other living organisms in the pond habitat. If Gallerucella is found, I will try to help minimize the population of the beetle.

The abdomen color of the Galerucella beetle is a light brown with dark brown tints near the end of the wings and near the thorax. Were as the abdomen color of the beetle I am studying is a gold with black spots and red outlines. Also, the beetle I am studying has an abdomen that is glossy.The abdomen on Galerucella is more lusterless. This shows a big characteristic difference between the two beetles

When Galerucella lays eggs in the spring, the eggs are round and white almost clear. After the beetles laid eggs in the container, I noticed that the were pink and yellow and more oval. Also, I believe that Galerucella beetles are fairly larger.

Once the eggs of the pond area beetles hatched and grew into maggots, I saw that the maggots were a dark black. The maggots of Galerucella beetle are yellow with black heads.
