Journal articles Findings from the Field Volume 1 Volume 1 of Maine's first science journal that is researched, written, and reviewed entirely by middle school students. Download the full journal here. 2018-06-13 gmri 1
Journal articles Ultrasonic Repellents Don't Affect Birds Behavior The purpose of this would be to figure out if ultrasonic repellents work regularly, if they are worth the investment and if they could be used commercially such as in airports to keep birds away from planes. and hopefully reduce the cost of the yearly damage cause by birds to planes. I put up 2 feeders one with an ultrasonic repellent and one without. On the one with the ultrasonic feeder i put a tracking camera to record if anything came. I record the data of the weight of the seed each time I fill the feeder three time a week. 2018-04-13 ctloaktree1990 1
Journal articles Squirrels Prefer Non-Predator Scent Over Predator Scent Abstract The purpose of my experiment is to see if squirrels would rather go to a non-predator scent site or a predator scent site. Then if you were trying to get rid of squirrels (or attract them) you would know what would work in terms of scents. Or if you were going to research squirrels yourself. The basic design of my experiment, was putting square cardboard boxes with bait and two different scents around each one (non-predator and predator). Then recording how many squirrels visited with a trail camera. 2018-04-13 ctloaktree1990 2
Journal articles Findings: The Goosefare Water Quality has Improved Abstract Our purpose was to see if the water quality in the Goosefare Brook was cleaner than it was in 2013. We traveled to multiple sites in the Goosefare watershed to test the water’s salinity, temperature, bacteria and pH. We used the LaMotte water monitoring kit to do tests on the water quality. We found out that the water quality has improved because the tests showed that the water quality was good. In 2013 there were 13 Contamination Advisories but recently in 2017 there were no Contamination Advisories. 2018-04-12 Cnye 4
Journal articles Findings: Goosefare Brook Watershed has Good Biodiversity but Phragmites is Invading Abstract Our purpose was to find out if the Goosefare Brook ecosystem is healthy. My group focused on biodiversity. Our method was to go to sites along the Goosefare Brook watershed and count the number of different plant and animal species we found. We used a quadrat to count the number of species in a square meter. We were looking for an invasive species, phragmites. We found that phragmites is not all over the watershed, but it is in three places. Where we found it, biodiversity was lower. 2018-04-12 Cnye 3
Journal articles Findings: Goosefare Brook is Cleaner than it was in 2013 Abstract We wanted to make sure that the Goosefare Brook was healthy because the brook leads into the ocean which is a big tourist attraction and if the water is dirty, people going in the water could get sick. We went to three different places and tested the water, looked for macroinvertebrates, and counted biodiversity. All the water tested “good”. We found lots of macroinvertebrates in one place, not as many in another, and no macroinvertebrates in the last place. 2018-04-07 Cnye 2
Journal articles Green Crab Male to Female Ratio 2013 to 2017 In our green crab study we looked at the population of green crabs. We also looked at how the clam population is decreasing. For our study we used legal crab traps. We also decided to use the catch and release method. Two of the charts I made were similar. The other chart I made had drastically more male crabs than female. In the studies that were done I found that there were drastically more green crabs than any other crabs in our ecosystems. I also found that the native crab population has decreased. 2018-04-03 fred_ab 3
Journal articles Squirrels Prefer Peanuts vs. Sunflower Seeds When Given a Choice The reason I chose this question was because I had wondered not just if squirrels would take the time to get a nut, but if they perceived the inherent value of a peanut compared to a sunflower seed. I found this interesting, because of the risk v. reward portion of this question, and experiment. To build the squirrel feeding platform, I will take one 3-by-3 piece of plywood, and screw one 2-by-4 on each side to create a platform surrounded by raised edges. Repeat these steps for the other 3-by-3 and 2-by-4s. 2018-04-01 ctloaktree1990 1

Journal articles Birds Behavior when Given the Choice of Black Oil or Striped Sunflower Seeds The purpose of this experiment is to find out how offering birds the choice of eating normal bird seed black oil sunflower seeds vs eating human seed striped sunflower seeds. I want to see how this changes bird behavior and how they react to this new food choice. I set up this design by hanging the two bird feeders each filled with one type of sunflower seed very close to each other so birds have the deliberate choice of which seed they want to eat. I am using two identical feeders, filled with the same amount of bird seed so the only difference in this experiment is the two sunflower seeds. 2018-03-30 ctloaktree1990 1
